Imagine a moment of dusk, just before the night takes over. The room is dim, lit only by the soft blue hue cast from the outside. A body performs the evening ritual of washing dishes by hand; an act inherited from the mother.
The gentle click-clack of cutlery and porcelain echoes through the space, inviting the mind to drift through tangled strings of memories.
In this domestic gesture lives, something deeper: a form of embodied tradition, passed through generations. The rhythm of care, the texture of repetition, the sound of staying alive. Every ritual is a refusal to vanish.
This installation holds space for the mundane as sacred, and for softness as a form of resistance. As the ritual concludes, the light fades completely. Only for a new day to rise, and the ritual to begin again.

A Floating Body of Cloud is an audio essay that explores the intersection of memory, migration, identity, and sound through the metaphor of clouds. I reflect on the ephemeral yet weighty nature of clouds, drawing parallels to his own diasporic journey and the experience of being Palestinian, queer, and displaced.
Through personal memories, the essay moves between different landscape: deserts, war zones, and distant host countries Jordan and Finland interweaving moments of joy, music, and belonging with the silence of trauma and loss. The narrative contemplates the role of sound as a carrier of memory, a means of resistance, and a force that shapes identity.
A Floating Body of Cloud portrays the diasporic body as an ever-moving entity, one that finds home in sound, in recollection, and in the act of floating between worlds.

The work was part of the research study “City is sound, city is a quick sand” at Heitsu Paviljonk 2024
I've found myself drawn to the nostalgic tunes of Arabic 80s pop, reminiscent of my childhood. However, instead of evoking familiar memories, these melodies now serve as a lens through which I perceive my diasporic existence, highlighting the feelings of detachment and alienation in the host country.
This shift prompted me to examine the materiality of sound, questioning which sounds resonate with me and have contributed to shaping my identity. This exploration stems from a pressing need to understand the implications of environmental sound on my Arab queer identity, particularly in the context of feeling detached from my surroundings in Helsinki, my current host country.
My hypothesis centers on investigating this sense of detachment within the Arab queer diaspora, which I refer to as a state of "float" experienced through sound. Float represents a conceptual framework for reconstructing the Arab queer diasporic experience through the study of environmental sound and music, exploring the transformative power of sound in identity formation.
In my installation, I employ the resonance of objects and bodies to construct temporal and spatial dimensions through sound. Selecting two distinct songs from my childhood, I repeatedly record them within the host body until the resonance of the body overwhelms and absorbs the original sound, replacing it with its own unique frequency. This process serves as a metaphorical representation of the fusion of personal and cultural identity within the diasporic experience, where individual resonance ultimately shapes and defines one's sense of belonging and connection.

The Sound
Base Sound
Samples of breathing sound and a drone sound. These sounds are granular synthesis generated without any gesture or interaction with the Qube. The idea here is to give a presence to the instrument without interfering of its state.
Gestural Sound
These sounds are made of OSC and FM synthesis generated in Pure data. These sounds are audible only by the performer interacting with the cube. Through pressure sensors these sounds are changing parameters according to the physical affordances of the performer.

AReflection on being a floating body, where stability remains distant and unresolved. Through crisp, clustered, and meditative sound, the installation unfolds across eight channels; each functioning as a performer, guiding the audience through a continuously shifting sonic landscape.
Each speaker carries its own tonality, texture, and sonic presence. At moments, these voices converge, forming a temporary sense of coherence, proximity, and existence. Gradually, they disperse again, fragmenting, drifting, and returning to isolation, mirroring the instability of belonging and the fragile nature of unity.
The work invites the listener to inhabit this state of suspension: between togetherness and separation, form and dissolution, grounding and drift.
